Cathepsin L is a cysteine protease with potent collagenolytic and elastinolytic activities and has increasingly prominent role in cardiovascular disease.In human carotid atheroma cathepsin L mainly accumulated in macrophages and mediated macrophages apoptosis, which led to plaque destabilization.In this article, the development of cathepsin L in atherosclerosis was reviewed.
