    Abstract:

The macro-vessels and micro-vessels of heart, brain, kidney, eyes and other vital organs are widely damaged in diabetes mellitus. It is shown the vascular endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis, associated with impaired endogenous vascular repair mechanisms lead to serious complications, such as diabetic nephropathy, cardiomyopathy, retinopathy. Vascular calcification widely exists in patients with diabetes, and it is also an important sign of predicting clinical cardiovascular events. In this review, the focus will be on the prevalence, characteristics and related risk factors of vascular calcification in diabetes, clarified main mechanisms and the latest progress which might be of significance to prevent, delay or even reverse the process of vascular calcification.
