Insulin resistance is a major pathophysiologic characteristic of type 2 diabetes mellitus （T2DM）.Recent studies have suggested that apelin,a novel adipokine,is involved in the transition from normal to diabetic status.Here we reviewed the progress on the correlation between apelin and T2DM by elucidating the roles of apelin on insulin secretion,insulin sensitivity and the metabolism of insulin responsive organs.
